Actually I've only purchased the bicycle part so far, $150 shipped. That was all I was planning to ride, but I then I accidentally found this company that uses the same bike and turns it into one of these.

I'm not planning to buy one from them, but I'm going to make my own. After checking around I found out complete motor kits with everything you need are available for as little as $115 shipped. I think it looks like fun. It meets my main criteria for fun anyway, it burns gasoline. Total cost is estimated to be under $300.

If anyone has any experience with these things I'd love to hear about it before I get started.

Looks like the old war time Whizzer. It was a motor kit made to be mounted to a standarad bicycle. These were not toys at the time but intended to be basic transportation in urban areas. With war time gas rationing , and rationing of all other strategic materials, the Whizzer was a totally viable option for many war time factory workers. Today original Whizzer motors and ansilary parts are highly sought after collectors items.

buddy of mine has a home made bike like that....he ordered an engine for around 100 bucks that mounts to any V frame style bike...he used a 10 speed from a garage sale...just over 100 bucks for a bike that does 35 or 40 mph not bad......his gf lost control hit a parked car and ended up with 15 stitches in her head...the police impounded the bike because he didnt have a plate or insurance on it...i guess if it has a motor over 49cc its considered a motorcycle.....

I looked into a kit here in PA, but if I wanted to go legit, I had to get it titled - which would have been a major PIA. I ran into a guy who has (he claimed) the first one titled and registered in PA.

The kits are pretty straight forward though. The engine will fit in most cruisers or MTBs (with a standard frame)

I've got to imagine that Texas laws make it a little easier to get one of these on the road. Don't forget to start a build thread!

This morning I've been doing some research on the legality of these THINGS. The reason I say things is because there's apparently not a good legal definition for them under Texas law. Texas law defines moped's and things, called motor assisted scooters, but this thing isn't a shoo in for either one.

Moped's are required to be registered, but you can't registered one of these because there's no VIN. Also a moped is defined as self propelled, but these things are not designed to ride away from a dead stop under there own power, you have to peddle them up to speed before engaging the clutch. You'll you'll rip the spokes out if you don't. Also you have to peddle them to start the motor, and there's no ignition, or electric start, so one could claim they're not self propelled if they were so inclined..

They're not motor assisted scooters either because, they're defined as having floor boards or a deck, to stand or sit on.

These are more technically motor assisted bicycles, which don't really have a good legal definition. They're really kind of in a gray area, where it's open to any Barny Fife to decide if you're riding a moped, motorcycle, or whatever.

Apparently most riders in Texas just keep there heads down and aren't having much problem, but there's maybe some risk. I found one guy in College Station that was sited by the University police, but the charges were reduced to a warning before it came to court. Most people claim the police just wave when they ride by.

Texas sounds a lot like PA then too. Most up here just ride them and try not to be idiots. It seems to work.

These are some of the kits I'm considering, in my order of interest. Everyone claims there's is the best, but as far as I can tell they're basically all the same motor with just some slight differences. Most claim they're are better because they have needle bearing wrist pins and big ends, and to beware of crappy ones with bushings, but I haven't seen any not claiming to have needle bearings. If you know of any other good ones I haven't mentioned let me know.

Performance upgrades include carburetters, expansion chambers, ported manifolds, air cleaners, different gearing, and some thing called a boost chamber.
