Default Possible air leak?

Hey guys. I'm new to this forum and new to Harleys. I just pickeed up an 84 XL1000. It starts and idles really nicely. But when you twist the throttle past 1/4 it starts to die. With the choke on, it accelerates fine. Even with 1/2 choke. I haven't taken the carb off yet (stock butterfly carb, not cv). I wanted to see what kind of input you guys have. Thanks in advance

Good looking machine. And welcome to the forum.
I'd pull the carb apart and blow it out.
Check the float level, new gaskets and try it again.
That way you know what you have and you have a basis for adjustments/improvements.
Note the jet sizes while you're in there.

Thanks Hippysmack! I ordered all new gaskets and intake manifold seals today. I figured if I'm gonna pull the carb ill replace all the old rubber. I also got better clamps for the manifold seals. Ill go ahead and repost this in the ironhead chat and see what else they say.
