I like to pull over at random places in the bush on my journey to and from work. It’s a 3 hour ride, one way. Creeks or rivers are my favourite places. Some have dirt tracks that follow the creek into the bush. Usually made by locals in 4wd’s that lead to their favourite swimming hole or camping spot. Here I’ll have a drink, take a piss, look around and smell the roses as they say. I haven’t found any roses yet but today I did find an old car. I’m pretty sure it was a 1970’s Ford Cortina stationwagon. I had one in the late 80’s and the memories started to fill my head. Stuff like the back doors flying open if you went around a corner to fast, that time the cops chased me and my friend in it and we got away. I even lived in that car with my dog for a month. My friend and I travelled halfway around Australia in that shit box car chasing work where ever we could get it before that car finally died. My friend has since passed aswell, he was killed in a bar room brawl back in ‘96. I still miss him. He always said I was his brother from another mother, he didn’t have any brothers. His death changed my life so much. I settled down not long after that, got a steady job, got married, got a mortgage, kids, grandkids now. And my best friend has missed it all, such a waste.

Somebody got my wife’s credit card number, which is linked to my account, and started having a little shopping spree. Their biggest purchase was a new iPhone. Apple rang her yesterday to confirm it was her that purchased the latest iPhone valued at $1900 Aussie money. I assume she must be registered with apple because she owns a few apple products and apple got suss on the transaction because whoever stole her details wanted it sent to South Australia, we live in Queensland. She obviously didn’t know anything about it and got apple to cancel the transaction and rang me. I checked the account and sure enough I could see the iphone on there, 2 different flights purchased from tiger airways and 3 after pay transactions, none of it was ours. All up about $2500 worth. So I had to phone the bank to cancel her card and start trying to sort this mess out. She always uses PayPal online so I have no idea how the thieving dog ****’s got her details. Lucky for us Apple were on the ball.

That sucks mate, hope you get everything back and sorted.
Only time i had a card issue was my works AMEX and that got second scanned in a gas station.
Always somebody trying to have a go. I just hope there is some divine retribution down the line for them.

I think that will be it for me until next year. Riding home yesterday required frequent stops to rehydrate and pour water over my head, back and chest to keep cool. Next tour out west will be in an air conditioned car. I probably won’t ride out west again until late February early March. So in the meantime I plan on stripping the bike of all the touring stuff, put the flat handlebars back on, change the gearing again, put a little headlight fairing on and maybe a colour change.

This summer I want more acceleration, cheap acceleration. So for the last few days I’ve gotten serious about finding a 70 tooth rear drive pulley that I might be able to fit to the XR. Searching the Aussie markets, local bike shops etc. was hopeless, apparently 70t 1-1/8” pulleys are as rare as hens teeth down under. I did find one in Australia but it was a little over priced, I could get one delivered from USA eBay cheaper, so I grabbed it, it should be here in a few weeks. Then I’ll have to measure it up and see what it needs to make it fit. It does look close in the pictures though haha.

Out of curiosity I found this gearing calculator that looks fairly accurate, so I punched in my details to see what I can expect. After playing around with it, taking screen shots etc I realised I messed up the 1st gear ratio but it will do for a ball park comparison.

For no particular reason I decided to make the comparison at 4000rpm. The yellow columns have the XRs details, speed at 4000rpm is in blue down the bottom right hand corner.

hey Davo , just checking your thread out good read. I'm an old carb man so f I change gear ratio I can only do it in the primary, as if I do secondary the speedo reads wrong.
I was looking at the values 34 engine 46 clutch I think that gives you 1.352 primary ratio & 32 trans & 68 rear wheel pully would give you 2.125 for a final ratio of 2.873 ( too tall for me ) where do you get the different size clutch hub sprockets? I know your rear tyre would be a lot different than my old stock sporty rear 16" tyre, but I have 3.3 final ratio but would like 3.42 final ratio so do you know if I can get different size engine sprockets? or even clutch sproket?

My bikes details are in the yellow column 34 engine 57 clutch and my stock final drive is 28 front 68 rear. That calculator doesn’t have an option to select a sportster. So the numbers you see in the first column are from an 2009 big twin. Nothing to do with my bike. I should of blacked out that column to avoid any confusion.

All the gearing changes I have made have used HD parts from other models and have all been final drive changes. I do know the XRs released in Japan have a bigger engine sprocket so maybe you can find something similar in your model. You just need to research, google is a good tool for this.

No worries, I thought might be something like that, I've watched enough, when people are maping EFI and how different software, is different to work with.

with the Twin Cam, I used an EVO big twin Clutch hub to lower my gear ratio & as it was in. the primary not the secondary , my speedo was not effected and speeds seemed about right. thought I might be able to lower my gear ratio that way I could use a Buell 27 gear box (cast iron) or a 26 alloy but my stock 29 seems ok, and found with my twin cam Dyna ( same size rear wheel & tyre ) 3.37 to 3.42 seemed to be the best all over ratio for street & once in a while at drag strip. any lower you loose out as need to shift again before finish line. & every shift takes more time.

It’s not that hard to swap out the pulleys. Maybe you could try a smaller gearbox pulley at the drags one day? Just for kicks
