Default Detent plate clip install

Okay so I'm putting things back together after getting the Buell crank conversion, 1275 kit, Andrews n4, etc but I'm getting held up but the detent plate clip. I just mangled one so ordered a couple more with some other parts from Ronnie's. I've read up on this but still feel like maybe I'm missing the trick of installing it right? So the piece is bowed with the arch facing away from the bike towards you as installing it? I couldn't find that info anywhere, the other way it would install easily. I am also considering a Baker smooth shift, what's another few hundred bucks to bypass this issue?
Going to try and find some e clips, read about them on here..
Any advice appreciated, thanks
