Here's my DOT 5 after going too long without changing it.
Don't look much different from yours that I could tell from your pics.
Was it just gunk or was it jelly?
Mixing DOT 5 and any other should create jelly gunk/clumps.

After draining / before cleaning. No jelly but just ugly slime/trash.

Whether it had the wrong fluid or not, it's good that you changed it. That's a bit of maintenance that is TOO OFTEN skipped! I swap to new fluid every other year in my bikes.

i have run dot 5 with zero issues for decades. the system must be squeaky clean and rubber parts compatible. now if you have abs, need to stick to recommendations as the vis is a big factor. that said, not all abs systems are joined but most are since it is cheaper to make, some are independent.

yes it had small gel particles in it with some sludge at bottom you can see in pic with the new fluid i removed all the old brake fluid and cleaned the inside of master cylinder real good. lucky it cleaned up good and looks brand new inside.

yes your correct sir. german and itailan cars and bikes always say flush brake fluid every 2 years. i do it in all my vehicles and and atv's ect anything with hydraulic brakes. my dodge ram 2500 2006 has just over 300k miles and brakes feel new and never had brake issues can shine a light in reservoir and the fluid is nice and clear. cheap and easy to do overlooked maintenance as you said

if you have the factory cap it should say on it what type of fluid to use
flushing the brake fluid will make your brakes work as intended and keep seals ect from leaking. dot 3,4 and 5.1 can mix but dot 5 is silicone and cannot mix with the others and you cant flush out all the dot 5 and use any other type as the seals are made for the silicone dot 4 should be flushed out at least every 2 years as 3,4,5.1 attract water and dirt out of the air more then dot 5

its cheap and easy so why not
