Angry New build - engine ping / gnarly vibration

Hi all,

I recently built a new 1999 Buell powered 2002 Sportster.

This is my first full ground up build and have ran into my first issue.

For some context I'm using a Dynatek 2000i cone ignition and a Mikuni HSR42 carb (160 jet).

I timed the ignition to 30 degrees of advance with curve 4 (recommended for stock engines) but am still getting engine ping/detonation and crazy vibration. I've tried retarding a few degrees by rotating counter-clockwise but still get the effect for the extent of the rotation.

I've only ran for a few seconds at a time as i'm afraid of blowing the engine.

Any recommendations?

Carb not tuned correctly?
Low oil?
Air leak?

Thank you!

I double checked and counter-clockwise is retarding.

Would the engine even fire if it was timed to the exhaust stroke and not the compression? I timed to TDC twice, but i guess it is possible that it was on the wrong stroke?

Are you getting pinging at idle? Just revving the engine while parked? At what RPM?

Are you running Single-Fire or Dual-Fire? What setting is the VOES switch on the module?

Do you have a working VOES to choose between advance curves? The VOES selects a more advanced curve at Idle/Cruise and a less advanced curve at WOT (each of the 1-4 curve settings actually has two VOES-selectable curves)...

Here's the Sportsterpedia section on the VOES:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...lectric_switch

Right below that is the Sportsterpedia section on timing:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...dels_thru_2003

If you are having a hard time verifying whether your TDC is on the Compression stroke by feeling the air compression at the spark plug hole, this image illustrates that you can verify that your TDC is on the Compression stroke by checking the rotor cup center cam notch location:

I'm just running parked it at idle. The choke is on so probably only 1000-1500?

Its setup for single fire, and I removed the VOES and the wire is not grounded.

I timed it on compression stroke, used a feeler, and referenced the mark to perfect it (twice). So I think that part is alright, contradicting my last message.

I'm now convinced that its probably an oil flow issue, I don't think its pumping properly as the oil seems stagnant. Going to double check my oil lines tomorrow, might have two switched.
