I FULLY agree about the other agencies. lol

My state does require turn signals - if originally equipped. Still waiting on HD to tell me if it was or not. It is a '73 but when it was built (late '72 or '73) is the question.

Up here in Washington there are no laws mandating turn signals; I haven't had any in 5 years and have never been phuqed with. Getting ready to ride down to San Francisco in a couple of weeks. I'm guessing that CHP will hassle me at least a few times.

I saw the CA laws when I was looking for WV but can't remember. It's easily found with google though if you want to check before going.

Federal law says they are required on the bike WHEN SOLD. After that it's what your state has in their laws. Most states don't enforce turn signal laws after a bike is considered an antique. Also, if you state dropped the annual 'safety' inspection you probably are in the clear. In SC the law always read that the turn signals were required to work. I never saw were it said you had to actually have them. I removed them from my 1977 XLCH within 1 year and nothing was ever said at inspection. Headlight, brake light and tail light was a whole other story.

I also don't have mirrors.

There's the reference. If a motorcycle didn't have turn signals, it certainly wouldn't meet the cited requirement thus it is effectively a mandate. Further, I doubt that a state could disregard a Federal law by conferring legality on a motorcycle without turn signals if it was made on or after Jan. 1, 1973. However, enforcement could certainly depend upon how the officer who stops you applies discretion.

Where does it say you have to KEEP them on the bike?

It says each turn signal ON the bike. Says nothing about having to have them on the bike. So I took mine off. In 1978.

Just talked to a HD dealer here in WV and was told that only 1974 and newer require signals to pass inspection.
