Default Tranny Question

In concert with my post about looking at the rebuild sticky...how come every pic I see here and other places, show completely dry, oil free tranny parts. I don't have a wash tank so I'm looking for the best way to clean everything before I work on it..

i always use a small tupperware tub and carb cleaner. most any solvent will do.

Cheap and super effective.

Get a bunch of the cheap tinfoil cooking pans from the grocers. I usually pay about $1 for two pans.

Get a gallon of mineral spirits.

Get some cheap chip brushes from the hardware store. You know, the fifty cent one inch brushes.

Steal the old ladies knickers.

Toss your parts in one pan and scrub. Move to second pan for final cleaning. Lay the now clean parts on a paper grocery sack.

Use the knickers to filter the mineral spirits when you pour it back in the can.

Mineral spirits leave a light oily film on your parts that helps slow down surface rust.

Carb cleaner is usually mek with xylene. Brake parts cleaner is usually acetone. Both leave parts totally oilfree and so it's a good to oil them lightly unless you have a nice warm and dry shop.

I have parts washers, but often just do it this way outside on sunny days, just cause.

right chuck, i didn't mention that i give them a light hosing with wd40 after cleaning.
