Default Runs great - stalls on clutch pull

My son FINALLY got the 87 out for a ride!

Runs great - feels good!

Occasionally stalls when pulling the clutch in when coming to a stop. Won't restart for 10 seconds or so. Then it's fine again! Idle speed seems good - not trying to get it low. I did just set by ear - no tach set up yet...

When I rebuilt the carb I went up 2 sizes on the pilot and MJ ( 60/165 ). Installed a long idle mixture screw and set it as usual and tweaked it for good power. The bike ran good blasting down my long driveway and around the yard.

It was colder tonight than when I did the initial setup. I wonder if the mix was off?

Have any of you had this issue?

Is your clutch dragging at all (while in gear and clutch is disengaged the bike is still lurching forward)?

Good idea - but no. Clutch works fine - recently adjusted.

May just be too Fat.. put the stock mainjet back, but leave the Midrange jet you have.
Maybe... but I think either idle too low, and/or, Intake leaks..
Fatter jetting masks intake leaks

It runs so well until it quits...

I'm wondering if the ignition circuit is unhappy. I did rewire the handlebar switches.

I will bypass everything and wire the circuit directly for testing purposes.

I will test for intake leaks before I head out again - Thanks!

I had an inspiration late last night:

Blocked exhaust!

We swapped the drag pipes for the stock exhaust system that's been sitting in the back of a garage for 20 years, so we could pass state inspection.

When we started the bike, some fluff blew out. Mouse nest sort of stuff. Didn't think much of it. Riding around the yard seemed ok ( I'm in Maine - big yards and long driveways are pretty common ).

I mentioned it to my wife this morning and she said that she had noticed that the exhaust only seemed to be coming from one of the pipes when she watched us the other day. She didn't know if that was normal, so didn't say anything ( she is completely non mechanical). Dang!!!

I think there is at least a partial blockage in one or both mufflers, and running at higher speeds causes a ton of backpressure and kills the engine. Low speed and idling don't show the problem.

The bike was running great on the drag pipes!

So - next step is to pull off the mufflers and blow it all out.

Thanks for the kind words - but - I haven't got to it yet.

I hope to find out this weekend.

I feel pretty good about it, though!

OK - I am an idiot....

This bike is new to us, and.....

I have never run out of fuel before - on ANY bike.

Yep.

Out of gas.

I guess it doesn't just quit all at once. It starts sputtering, I guess as fuel sloshes around and gets to the petcock - or not....

I could SEE gas in there. I knew it was low, but I only wanted to take a quick ride around the lake.....
