Default trans spacer question

Shouldn't there be a spacer/washer between gear #38 and the door?

I've always wondered why Harley did it that way too. Seems it would be better to have a hardened steel thrust washer there. (they use one on the other side of the countershaft) But consider this:

An aluminum piston lives for thousands of miles in a cast iron cylinder at very high heat, high speed with alot of thrust applied to the skirt. Made posible by an oil film.

Steel tappets that have a lot of side thrust go up and down in aluminum guides.

Steel oil pump gears turn in an aluminum pump body.

In a perfect world there is no side thrust with spur gears on parallel shafts, so a steel gear should be able to run against the aluminum door with an oil film.

However I have seen trans doors that the gear has worn into, but that is usually because something else is worn or set wrong.

The C shaft drive gear has a raised circular ring on one side and that goes against the door. In a way, that acts as a spacer, keeping most of the gear from touching the door.
