Yes, I also remember reading or hearing that there was a corrosion issue with a certain type of pawl spring. Never paid much attention to it until Bustert posted this, but does a 14 coil cadmium plated spring corrode more than a 16 coil one with the same coating just because it has 2 less coils? It's not making sense to me.

Spring force isn't the issue if a 14 coil black phosphate is OK. As long as the spring wire size is the same.

Anyone got an answer?

Mr Goldmember. Will the tag line on the bottom of your post #10 take residency on all of your foregoing posts???

been awhile but i think the story goes:
the early spring had issues with corrosion largely due to maintenance issues, the cadmium coating has nothing to do with it, it is mostly a storage issue. the spring material would react when oil had excess water issues and acids began to form. also, the steel and aluminum are dissimilar metals so that compounded the issue.
the newer 16 spring is a diff material, why the extra coil count i do not know, perhaps to increase shift performance (or the diff to allow recognition, a lot of dealers probably would still use them) ??? does it have more tension??? all the fsm mentions is to check free length.
the black phos is more a storage issue as well. coatings add nothing to the spring but when you have hundreds in a bin, you do not want atmospheric conditions to start rusting as pitting does effect the spring.

Sounds logical. Thanks Bustert.
