Default Larger Roadster tank for 79-81 Sportster

I've been given more thought to swapping the 2.2 gallon tank on my 80 XLH, for something larger. I've been researching this on the forum and elsewhere but there isn't very much information for the 79-81, since the tanks were unique for these years.
Unfortunately most of the older posted photos here on the forum that showed those years are no longer available in the threads.
I'm leaning to use an original Roadster 3.5 tank with a 22mm petcock thread on the right side. I'm wondering if all the factory tanks all had the filler cap centered on the tank, or if depending on the year (79-81) were tanks also available offset to the right hand side of the tank? I'm finding a few used tanks over on fleabay, listed as a HD tank but some of these tanks may be aftermarket takeoffs and the sellers just don't know what they really have. Some are offset and some are not.
Another issue is the front/rear bolt mounting brackets for the 79-81 measure 15" on center but as I understand the Roadster tanks all attached to the frame (at the rear) with the spring, etc. I understand all that ... so if it has a rear mount like the 2.2 peanut tank it's not an original? Some of the tanks I'm seeing appear to either be 3.1 king tanks or Paughco tanks.
I like how the 79-81 Paughco tanks are offered with single or double caps which seem to be positioned really high to maximize fuel capacity and they use a 22mm petcock but they are offered in either a 3.0 gallon "Mustang" or big 4.2 "Axed" gallon tanks. I'm afraid a 4.2 tank is going to look to big.... all leading me back to considering an original Roadster 3.5 tank.
For those of you that have looked into this for your 79-81 is there some information that you can share?

A friend of mine has a '79 with a 3.1 gal. "King Tank" (flat bottom) that was painted to match and installed back in the mid '80's. His uncle (was original owner) purchased it thru Drag Specialties. They still sell the same tank, it's slightly taller and wider.

I have an original 2004 roadster tank that of course won't bolt on yours, but could be adapted to fit. You can have it for the cost of S&H. There is a non-original petcock on it, IIRC does not need the vac port.
If you want measurements let ne know.

I appreciate your generosity to offer me your tank. But I'm going to stick with more of a direct swap from my year. I'm trying to stick with using the 79-81 parts as much as possible. But thanks again.

Yeah I figured that, just thought I'd offer anyways. It's good that you're doing it right instead of a hack job.

FWIW I have an original (I think) front and rear fenders off a 1980 (roadster?) I intend to put the front on my 2004 depending if it fits the way I want it to. But if you know anyone who wants the rear (and maybe the front too) just lemme know.

The 1979-82 3.6 gallon XLS fuel tank part numbers 60976-80 and 61215-83 is perfect for your 1979. It is very similar to the SuperGlide tank which is very good. Several of us on this forum have used these tanks.

V-twin Mfg makes a 3.5 gallon tank which they call a replica K tank, it's available for several models. Here is the link to the one for 57-78...maybe there is one for the '79 also

Be sure to check out the SuperGlide tank and the mounting kit for it at J&P Cycles, etc. This tank and the Roadster tank do not depend on the positions of holes thru the top bar of the frame.
