Default random rattle

My bike is running strong, starts ok, idles. Not smoking or burning excessive amounts of oil. Cold compression on both cylinders is 150. It has a random rattle I have yet to identify. I pulled the primary cover to inspect chain, tensioner, compensator, kicker gear and electric starter components. All looked good. I did find that the bolts under the starter solenoid for the rear motor mount were loose. All valves have been adjusted so pushrods will roll between fingers with lifter all the way down. What's a good way to check for a broken valve spring without disassembly?

i had something similar.i could hear it when riding it would stop when i pulled in the clutch lever, thought it was in the primary.then i tried pushing down on the gas tank that stopped it.loose gas tank bolts.wouldn't a broken valve spring show up during the compression or leak down test?

I am unsure whether a compression/leakdown test is 100% accurate in the detection of a broken valve spring. I am running the Kibblewhite light weight racing springs. They have an inner and outer spring. If either was broke the other may hold the valve for test I do not know?

I've had the same problem as Brucstoudt. Sounds dreadful. and it is random.

Mechanical issues in the engine are seldom random. Thyey all have their unique frequency.

While the bike is idling do the stethoscope (scre driver) thing on the engine. Be patient and after awile you will learn to identify the tap tap taps of the tappets, the fring rumbling noise of bearings etc.
As you move the stethoscope around you will be able to locate where inside the engine any noise is actually coming from.

I would be extremely surprised if you had a broken valve spring.

I had a serious rattle, sounded like from top end, rear cylinder. It went on for weeks.

Out riding one day I decided to listen more closely. With no traffic about I leaned forward, my face close to the bars/tank area. The sound went away.

I repeated the experiment and it was 100% predictable.

My helmet has steel snaps to hold on the peak. One was loose

+1, Me too Mick. the randomness of the rattle was driving me nuts. I swore it was engine noise but it was the snaps on my helmet visor. Thin rubber washers fixed it.

Unfortunately this random rattle can occur with the bike sitting on the side stand in the garage. It's even made the noise as the engine is shutting down.

Does it change frequency as the rpms change, or stay the same?
