11B40 I've been waiting on my primary cover gasket, starter housing gasket and oil to arrive so I could reassemble and test. The tappet rollers have been on my mind. If the problem noise is still there I will probably pull the cam cover for a good look. I run an external spin on oil filter so the oil stays particle free.

I don't know of any way to check the rod set except pulling the heads and barrels. Then you will find way too much side to side and up and down movement of the rod set. But that is not that common with these engines. I happened to be riding my KH up to lake Tahoe when the rod set went south. it was a very subtle thing but you could just hear and feel it getting worse as the miles went by. I would just ride it and wait for it to get worse, if it doesn't, that isn't the problem.

11B40 no it's definitely not a rod knock. I have a bit of experience under my belt I worked as an HD dealer mechanic back in the Ironhead, Shovelhead days. Been working on every model since.

Cut open the oil filter and check for debris. That will tell you right away if something is going away.

They don't call me Ironhead Rick just because I'm hard headed

I'm selling my tools. It's become apparent I am the problem. I just snapped the top rear case stud for the rear motor mount. Yep. Who da thunk by hand with a 3/8 drive ratchet.

So, we can rule out you not tightening stuff on this bike properly as to the source of the rattle ?

That's weird. I can't get enough torque with y 3/8 drive stuff to break wind let alone bolts.

Ok what are thoughts on continuing to operate the motorcycle with one of the three rear case studs snapped off?

It's going to be a real PITA to repair it.

For me I would consider the rest of the general condition of the bike. If it's been well looked after, everything done correctly apart from that 1 stud I would probably leave it for now.

If their is evidence that whoever broke the stud was just plain ham fisted I would consider rebuilding it. You might find other horrors waiting inside.

I would have to guess the engine has been running with that broken stud since the last time the engine was out of the bike.
