Engine # and title id it as a 79. Somebody, previous to me, did the kick conversion. Besides the obvious lack of 79 rear master cylinder do you see that makes you question the year. Just curious.

Can you see those tiny pics Randy ?

My eyesight must be getting worse.

I actually have a 79. Just a sidecar engine holder.

Kick conversion was done prior to my ownership. Engine # and title ID it as a 79. It does also have an aftermarket horseshoe oil tank. What else do you see that makes you question the year? Just curious.

Seeing Ferrous Head's photo of his 79, there is no way the horseshoe oil tank I have would fit between the engine and the frame. Hmmmm. Any numbers on the frame I could look for?

Lots of VIN information in Sportsterpedia: http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/s...istory:99xx-01

'70 and up are titled to the frame, which is stamped on a pad on the right downtube, near the neck. See page 29, picture D for an example: http://www.harleykmodel.com/technica...oskrg-1-v5.pdf

'69 and down are month/year coded with a letter/number combination, on a boss under the seat.

So, checked the vin on the frame. Matches the engine vin. This indicates that it is indeed a 1979. But, something is definitely odd about the rear half of the frame when compared to other 79s I have seen on the web. Will post some more pics when I get home later. Not really concerned about it but would like to know what I have.

They changed the frame pretty dramatically in 1977/78.

Easy to spot if it's one of the later frames - the shock mount location changed and was moved towards the back by about a foot.
The 79 has a one year only oil tank setip. The left the battery out in the air for everyone to see. The "stylists" at Harley told them the bike couldn't look 'Too clean" by hiding things behind plastic covers.

That, coupled with the odd exhaust system meant sales plummeted and the 79 is one of the more "unloved" of the Sportster family.

But the frame is definitely an improvement and the 79 is the closest thing to an XR frame they made. Exhaust systems are no big deal.

None of this matters much to me as I use solo's as a frame to move my sidecar engines around in. People hold onto side car engines for a long time for me in the neat holders.

Didnt manage to get pics yet. Maybe tomorrow. This is getting to be a bit of a mystery, as it appears my frame in a combination of years. I have the vin pad with the correct vin. However, the rear section of the frame appears to be older (70ish). There are casting numbers on some parts that I am looking into. The saddle area casting has L8 stamped on the bottom, right side. I have read that this would mean a Dec 68 manufacturing date. The whole rear section of the frame looks exactly like one from that era. However, it has the square tube swingarm and rear disc brake. Not sure what I have at this point.
But, I like a good mystery.
