A true bolt on, you do not have to cut the strut mounts off. Here is one on ebay, to show you one.

and they have been around since the days before the evos, and I have installed many of them. So, some you do cut, but these, you don't. And if you don't like the angle, or height, you can alter the top to make it go lower, and still not weld them.

I agree with this, that way you can save the original frame in case you want to go back to stock configuration... If your on a budget,try finding an extended (2''-6") swing-arm and using solid struts instead of shocks.

Totally agree. If you are determined to beat the crap out of yourself riding a hardtail, just buy a frame. For a grand or so you can get frame from Drag specialties that will accept 95% Stock Harley parts. However do not destroy the original stock frame. They are getting hard to find . I almost puked watching Danny the Douche on Counting Cars destroy a beautiful old stock iron head with a weld on hardtail and the most gawdy awful paint job...…..EVER.

Well, at least mine was not beautiful or stock when I got it. Hell, it wasn't even running. I feel less bad about chopping it. To be honest, I didn't feel that bad to begin with.

there are too many of these bikes getting ruined every year. there are plenty of project bikes out there that have hardtails and need finishing. many for sale shortly after completion(why is that). I remember all the triumph 650s there used to be. turned into garage art and looking pathetic. now they are mostly gone. RIP ironhead, someday nobody will want you and you will be parted out.

My one and only hard tail was a basket case with a bolt on that I only rode for a couple years. It still had the shock mounts but cut off behind that. I simply had pieces fabbed up and went back to the swing arm . Here is before and after pictures of the same bike

That seems like a crazy high price to have the hard tail welded on. Is that price just for the actual welding? Is that price from a welding shop, or a motorcycle shop?

Because the actual welding part shouldn't be too hard. In fact, should be an easy job for any experienced welder. Of course if you are expecting them to tear down the bike, make the cuts, get everything ready to weld up, weld on the hard tail, then reassemble and deliver you a ready to ride bike, then that price seems more reasonable.

But it seems that if you just brought in a frame that already had the necessary cuts, along with the weld on hard tail where all they really have to do is put it together, make sure everything is aligned correctly, then weld it up... Id think you could find someone to do it for around $500 easy. If you've done all the prep work, it shouldn't be more than a half day job of actual welding. At most.

Disclaimer: I've never welded a hard tail. Ive just seen videos on youtube of people attaching the led sled weld on hard tails. I did work as a welder in a fabrication shop for about 8 years while I was going to college though. We mostly built stuff for oil field companies, construction projects, etc. Industrial stuff. There could be something Im underestimating about welding on motorcycle framed, so don't take my word as gospel. But still, welding is welding. Shouldn't be that difficult of a job.
