The 4.5 looks really sweet, IMO

I like the mileage with the larger tank I have, but I've never come to terms with the looks of it. After running it on the old XLX for a couple years, I put the original 2.25 tank and original seat back on it this past weekend. I can get over 100 miles out of the small tank, so for now, I think I'll leave it on. I really like the looks better this way, and if I decide to take a longer trip on it, switching the seat and tank back is relatively easy.

Big tank & full seat

Small stock tank and seat

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

I have the 3.3 now and a 4.5 on order. I can get about 100 miles with the 3.3 and I hope that I can get a few more miles with the 4.5 and a little more clearance with the handlebars.

I would like a larger tank but I'll just keep the 3.3. I refuel around 120 miles without hitting reserve. There are some large gaps between towns so I hit it early.
There are some nice larger tanks but I'd rather the money goes for a bore kit first.

I just came home from a 2300km trip to Norway (from Denmark) on my 48. Norway is big and much less inhabited than Denmark. I brought 3,3ltr of extra fuel but I ended up never needing it. Anyway, on a trip like that it would have been one worry less to have had a larger tank.

As far as looks go the peanut is iconic. For more than local riding the bigger tanks definitely have advantages, but they don't have the look.

I'm not sure on clearance because the 4.5 is likely wider. Even though the 2.1 is a very sharp tank, it's use is mainly meant for around town. The 4.5 I think is a very sharp tank, especially from the side, and that wide flat top makes it perfect for a tank bag. I guess the 3.3 is a compromise between the two.

I really like the looks of the Peanut & King tanks but riding the bike there's no contest. I definitely want the 4.5 gal tank.
