The major difference is the shovelhead has a separate transmission and an ironhead is a engine/transmission unit. Shovelhead has aluminum heads and iron heads have iron.

Oh Mr. bustert, you never tire.

However: I have to admit, my shovel is faster than my sporty.

Haha! Yeah, HD owners are getting started EARLY!! LOL, That's my son he is 12 now 😁 I was comparing the engine by site to that link that was provided to me in regards to Sportster history and Big V twin engines, and also my friends shovel he's. I guess from what he told me is, the engine and transmission casing is divorced on a shovelhead, as opposed to the sportsters the engine casing and transmission is all one unit. However he said you could put Big V headers on a Sportster. I'll include a close up of my engine, my friend shovelhead engine and the engine online that's listed a a shovelhead. So because of the similarities in the 84 Ironhead engine and shovel head engine (despite the connected trans and engine case) is a Ironhead basically a shovel? Lol [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

I am sorry if I have nudged some members towards the title of Wing- Ding,I had no idea and surely would not lightly apply that title to anyone ,because there probably many ways in which,to first appearance, some may appear to be a wing- ding, but on closer inspection may appear to be respectable ,knowledgable ironhead owners,my apologies to those who slipped under the shadow of my words!
