I am trying to make a motorcycle that I buy here to be road worthy, and the law requires me to have a functional speedometer, but if when I go to an inspection, which is in a closed place, if it loses signal and ERR marks instead of the odometer, I will also fail the inspection and would be wasted $.

Can you put photos of how you installed it? The photos at the beginning have already expired, they cannot be seen

I recommend you upload them to https://postimages.org/

And where did you take the 12v?

How about the rain? I'm stranded in Costa Rica, here it rains six months a year ...

Thanks a lot!
I should have come back earlier with an update, sorry about that I have an aftermarket fuel tank with FL style dashboard. I made a bezel of aluminium because it's was too small (85cm). It worked quite well. See pictures. I used the 12V from the old speedo's lighting. It stated that it was waterproof. I cannot acknowledge that. I haven't had the chance to test it.

Unfortunately it started acting strange after 600-1000 km's. Condensation occured every time after about 50km's. After that the needle hangs. After turining contact 'off' and 'on' again it went back to normal. The seller let me test the speedometer. Testing works but everytime the condensation occurs the speedo fails. The picture below shows the needle while the bike was at a stop.

So, I have taken it off for now and went back to the mechanical driven speedo. The unreliability stopped me from using it any longer. I have to look into it again someday to see if I can do something about the condensation. I was really sad about it because it worked very accurate at first and I think it looked quite good on the bike. It seems the condensation has an effect on the stepper motor which moves the needle, but not on the driven distance.

My advice? Since you need it for a road worthyness I would choose a simple good and reliable(!) solution for a speedometer. I just tried this GPS speedo because I could get it for only 35 bucks from a Chinese website.

Thanks for all the pictures and detailed information

Did you use silicone RTV to cover the back of the speedometer?

What size is the bezel? If it is 85 mm and 96 mm the bezel I think it can fit on the stock Sportster clamp :O

I ordered this one, I wanted a modern look ($ 115 to Costa Rica, original one was $ +600 )

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KP7HGJ4...v_ov_lig_dp_it

I plan to use tons of silicone on the back and borders to try to waterproof it

No, it was waterproof. Not tested it though. But the condensation did not get out, so it must be waterproof

I made the bezel myself from a piece of alumin(i)um. The innner diameter was 85mm which made de speedo fit, the outer diameter of the bezel was 120mm. That's the size of the outer ring of the dashboard.

Modern looking thing. There's no needle that can get stuck using this model

I would go easy on the sillicone the product description says:
"-IP67 waterproof and dustproof grade"

Hope this one works better without the use of a needle (or pointer?)

Keep us updated!

Looking good! Nice how it fits the original bezel.

It's the same brand as mine. But this might just work better because it has no pointer that is driven by a stepper motor. I think that's what's failed in mine, because it still gave the right amount of distance.
