Default What's up with this Starter/Cover/Clamp

I'm not sure what's stock and what's not on my 73 XLH which was previously owned by a dear friend (RIP Curt!) who dressed it up to his liking.

I've always wondered why the chrome cover on the starter isn't long enough to cover up the "fluted" starter housing's end plate. I assume this chrome cover is aftermarket but was the stock starter cover (31565-67) long enough to cover up the starter's fluted end plate?

And how about the clamp? It seems to fit fairly well on the pushrod tube base bolt but the diagrams in both the FSM and PM show the mounting tabs of the clamp facing aft from the starter... not forward. Is this clamp mounted correctly?

Thanks! ZT

The parts book drawing is backwards. Your clamp is on right.

Prestolite and hitachi starters were used on ironheads. The prestolite is longer. The parts book shows the same part numbers for the chrome cover and bracket for both starters.

You have a prestolite. Your cover and my OEM cover "appear" to be the same length. But my hatachi doesn't have a fluted end cap so I can't compare to yours.

I suspect that yours is correct and that is just the way it is.

If you find the look of the "flutes" objectionable perhaps you could paint it black.

I have never seen that clamp over the starter motor, ever.

Thanks needspeed! I appreciate your reply!

Interesting that the same cover is used on both starters. And yes, I'll probably paint the fluted end plate if I can't find a "correct cover" that covers it... if there ever was such a cover. I'm hoping someone more familiar will chime in on this.

I can see why no one uses them after finally getting this one in place! But I do think they're stock. (67413-67 67-*) About half the width of the clamp lays over the arch cutout in the trans housing and there is not much room there to begin with. I was careful to make sure there was clearance all around at the bottom of the strap before tightening the mounting bolt at the push rod base. Seeemed to work out OK. Maybe the strap is intended to keep the starter from hitting the trans case if it came loose. I dunno!

Hey Rick!

I meant to ask if you've ever seen a chrome cover that fully covers up the fluted end plate of a Prestolite starter? Ever?

Did the stock cover do this? Do you, or anyone else, know of any after market covers that do?

Thanks! ZT
