Default Grenade plate fix with XR1200 parts...

I replaced my grenade plate with two steels and a friction plate, that worked but often caused a very annoying squeal when taking off in first gear, a common problem from what I've read.
Did some research and learned that the XR1200 (and Buell XB's) use an entirely different judder spring setup BUT use the same regular friction and steel plates as an XL. Ordered the XR parts as my dealer didn't have them.
Finally got the XR1200 parts today and they work great...the grenade plate is gone AND the clutch squeal (sounded a lot like a slipping auto belt) I gained when I replaced it with two steels and a friction plate, plus clutch takeup is smoother now too. Basically the first friction plate is replaced with the XR1200 items and the spring plate is replaced with two steels and a friction, only need to buy two steels as the original first friction plate is reused.
Could have gone with an aftermarket clutch however my bike is only Stage 1 and doesn't need it, some of them squeal too, plus some of the makers are persnickety about what lube is used...wanted a clutch that was happy with the standard HD recommended stuff.
The photo shows the XR1200 parts plus the two extra steel plates needed, total cost about $65. BTW the spring has to go in the right way, the FSM section for the XR1200 clutch has a diagram that details this.

Bluto - Thanks for testing out this combination as a possible solution to the XL Spring Plate failures...

I would like to see at least a few months of wear & tear on this arrangement before including it in the Sportsterpedia...

Please post up again on this thread when you have a few thousand miles on the fix...

It should be pointed out that the XR1200 Clutch Basket is not the same as used on the XL models - The XR version has Compensating Springs built into the base to help with the 'shock' of clutch engagement...
