Default Buell lightning

Hi all im new to this page as well as a buell owner. I picked up a package deal and got a lightning.. Now im trying to get it started.. And keep it running! In the process of locating a problem ive removed all intake covers. I also found a box (power comander?) Under the seat which says for racing only.. It pops and backfires but wont start...both pluggs have spark.. All ideas are welcome...

Possible Reasons For
Engine Turns Over But Does Not Start

1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Discharged battery, loose or broken battery terminal connections.
4. Fouled spark plugs.
5. Loose or shorting spark plug cables or connections.
6. Ignition timing badly out of adjustment.
7. Loose wire connection at coil or battery connection or
..... plug between ignition sensor and module. See Section 4.
8. Ignition coil not functioning.
9. Ignition module not functioning.
10. Ignition sensor not functioning.
11. Sticking or damaged valve or valves.
12. Engine flooded with gasoline as a result of overchoking.
13. Engine oil too heavy (winter operation).
14. Ignition circuit interlock malfunction.
15. No output from the ECM. See dealer.
16. Inadequate fuel pressure in fuel lines (possible leak).

17. Clogged fuel filter (on pump or in-line).

Sportsterpaul... The box has norhing writen on it other than for race only... No numbers or codes... I had it runing o ce however a bit irratic ... Its fuel injected but seems to flood very quickly

Not overly familiar with Buells but on the Sportys you can pull diagnostic codes from the speedometer.

If it looks like this it's your ECM. The "For Race Use Only" ECM has modified maps probably based on the intake and exhaust on the bike.



Post the details of the bike (year, exhaust, intake, etc) and people can provide better help.

Pictures would help too.

Paul's right about the trouble codes. I think it depends on the year on how to do it. Invest in a "Buelltooth". $45 and you can use your smart phone to check codes and test certain things on your bike. Mine works on my 2000 S3 and 2009 XB12R. You can also use it to adjust and or load maps (not sure if the race ECM is locked or not). Lots of free maps on that site too. Tested and verified by multiple riders.

If the bike sat for a period of time, the injectors may be fouled. I used a bit of Seafoam in the gas and it solved an issue I had with rough running (mostly on one cylinder). If you tried to start it with old gas I would almost bet that is the issue. Or at least part of it.

Airbozo you got it. that's the same box. the bike has sat about 3 yrs yes ive cleaned everything tank lines new filter... cleaned plugs as bike has only 4000 miles ( not much for 2002).. I did not take out the injectors though... I have removed the whole intake mumbo jumbo for a cleaner look.. however not sure about what to do with the sensor... my old school mechanical skills doesn't think that should create such a problem... I have filled the tank with 92 octane no ethanol (that's what I use in my bmw) ill check into this buelltooth and have to borrow a buddies smart phone... id like to figure it out.. the closest mechanic (that has a good rep.) is over 100 miles away

My 2000 S3T sat for about 3 years when I bought it with 5000 miles in 2012, and after running some seafoam the engine ran good, but the top end gaskets started leaking, so I had to replace them. I now have 35000 miles on it.

My 2009 XB12R had 503 miles on it when I bought it 2 years ago and it ran like shit (rear cylinder was not runnning smooth). Ran some seafoam through it and after a few minutes it started running great. Now has 13000 miles.
