The waayyy better heads of a 1200 would pull bigger stumps and much easier. Especially with a 28 tooth final.

Got interested in Sportsters about 2 years ago and rented two for a full day to see if they were right for me...the accompanied test rides I'd done were not enough to know. First time was an 883 Iron which didn't do too much for me, second was a 1200 Roadster that I liked a lot and I eventually bought one.

That is what I did to my 2016 iron 883 , Hammer 1275 kit , ported my 883 heads and kept the stock sized valves , n4 cams , powervision, Vance and Hines , short shots . I’m happy , now I have room Down the road to find some Xb heads and have them worked over before I buy my next hammer kit for the rebuild when it’s time . I’m keeping my eyes open for some heads now . Bike is really fun off the line . Plenty more power than my buddies factory 1200 stage one .... fun bike ..... but I’ll want more ina couple of years lol .... keep the hammer guys in business I guess LOL my only regret is not sending my 883 heads to hammer to do the work, I won’t make that mistake again , I may not even buy new heads down the road , they do great work with 883 heads so I may have mine done over .

If I had it to do again... I would use an XB (post 2004 1200) head to do my performance build.

If I want to get into the 70 HP club, and I want to do it cheap... 883 heads... 3.500 forged lightweight pistons... Cams.... Jets for carb....Gaskets.... Less than a thousand spent, and you will gain about 35 horse assuming you have a good exhaust and breather already.
With your Low 883 gearing you will be beating the factory stock 1200s on a stoplight to stoplight drag race.
You will have to figure out what kind of rider you are... will you want a few more HP, and be satisfied, or will this HP pursuit be a never ending quest. Most people fall into the latter catagory. If you are the latter type.. start purchasing parts so that you won't have to remove them at a later point.

Problem for me is that it is NOT easy to find good used heads over here... neither can send mine to Hammer... neither know someone who I can trust to do do a decent porting job... I think I am pretty much stuck with my stock 883 heads!
