Absolutely, I've been comparing the rubbermounts to various FX or FL models since they debuted.

Here's one looking at dimensions and power:

bike - wet weight / engine size / hp / length, wheelbase / tire sizes F and R


70's FLH - ~760# / 1206cc / 50-60 / ~63", ~94" / 130/90-16 and 130/90-16

70's FX - 584-606# / 1206cc / 58-65 / ~64", ~94" / 100/90-19 and 130/90-16

XL 72 - 562# / 1203cc / 54-62 / ~60", ~90" / 100/90-21 and 150/80-16

XL 48 - 562# / 1203cc / 54-62 / ~60", ~89" / 130/90-16 and 150/80-16

When we first bought the XL1200Lr I started compared it in size/capacity/capability with the FX/FXR line:

1973-77 FXE - 1206cc / 58 hp / 584# wet / 5.0g fuel / single front disc


1979 FXE - 1206cc / 58 hp / 584# wet / 5.0g fuel / single front disc / 100/90-19F and 130/90-16 R


1982 FXR - 1337cc / 54-67 hp / 64 torques / length 94.2" / seat height 28" / rake 31 deg / trail 5.5 / wheelbase 64.7" / 621# wet / 3.8g fuel / dual front disc / 90/90-19F and 130/90-16 R

1988 FXRS - 1337cc / 58 hp / 617# wet / 3.96g fuel / dual front disc /

1990 FXRS - 1337cc / 50 hp / 609# wet / 4.23g fuel / single front disc /

1992-93 FXRS - 1337cc / 50 hp / 609# wet / 4.23g fuel / single front disc / 100/90-19F and 130/90-16 R


2007-10 XL1200L - 1203cc / 70 hp / 79 torques / length 89.1" / seat height 28" / rake 29.6 deg / trail 4.7 / wheelbase 59.7" / 581# wet / 4.5g fuel / single front disc / 100/90-19F and 150/80-16 R


The only real difference if the FXs and FLs usually had a couple inches more in wheelbase and length, which helps a little with comfort, but doesn't necessarily add to handling.

I was at the monument at the Geographical Center of North America and a guy who was riding a Ducati from Vancouver told me that I should choose a better bike for traveling. A yahoo on a freakin' Duck was telling me my bike was the wrong bike for traveling!

Rectal occulitis is so common that it could almost be considered a plague!

That's kinda the original point of the letter codes.

F = BT
X = smaller/sportier front end.

As opposed to L = touring front end.

I think part of the problem is there's lots of speculation and misinformation combined with the fact that it's all derived from observation. Afaik Harley has never produced a definitive summary of the rules.

I've found enough commonalities in the summaries over the years to feel pretty confident that if the designations aren't exact, they at least are observationally correct.

The internet is such a wonderful thing because of the wealth of information that is readily available. The problem is it also gives the average doofus a voice and the ability to perpetuate misinformation. Since the advent of the internet I've 'learned' that tire cupping is no longer abnormal tire wear and is actually indicative of performance and that a 1200cc motorcycle is an entry level bike.
