Honestly, I've been through a bunch of em and I've never seen a crack there.
On the outside, usually freezing with water. All the time on marine and race engines.

The lifter valley will crack from from freezing, but it will crack from stress. The casting is thin in that area, and can be thinner than normal from core shift.

If look at the photo of the valley, you see a rust stain. That block passed a pressure test, but it was leaking a little bit at times. A magnauflux test showed the crack.

They made something like 80 million SBC’s. An avid hobby builder might never see one cracked. Most automotive machinist have seen a few.

I did noticed the stain.
I've had a few blocks fluxed but mostly just had them dipped.

It's just hard for me to visualize enough water getting past the SBC intake to freeze the valley.
In Pontiacs I could see that happening easier without the hood.
Marine engines I hadn't considered.

It’s engine that use straight water. and crack from the ice inside the water jacket. Freshwater cooled boat engines and racing engines that can’t run anti freeze. The owner forgets to drain and winterize.

Alright, that makes sense.
No antifreeze and all bets are off.
But, that has nothing to do with the SBC (as it was intended to be used anyway).

I had a Fiat in drag, an FSO 125p aka Polski Fiat.It was a Fiat built under licence in Poland with a 1300cc OHV engine.Had it for 6 years, very reliable but as it was 8 years old when I bought it from Theresa a Blackpool bar maid the rust monster had a good start.Not a bad car though the British weather must have killed them all off by now
