Nope. But there is a defined position for those retainers. The caps screw down into the tubes as well and I think if screw the retainers in as far as they go you'll only get another 1/4 to 1/2 inch travel anyway.

here's where i was going with this.the first time i had my forks apart i ran the spring retainers down to where i thought they were when i removed them.the last time i had the front end apart i ran them down until they stopped.after installing the new fork gaiters they seemed stretched out pretty far in this photo

Well, I can see nothing wrong with doing deeper into the tubes if you can. Not on brand new springs but after 50 years the original springs will have sagged a bit.
And everything is a compromise. HD would have worked out spring rates for the mythical "average" rider.
Suspension units have a "sweet spot" where they work best as well.
If your an "average" rider and you jump on a bike the static ride height should be perfect.

The proverbial 97 lb weakling will find the forks topping out constantly and typical sumo wrestler will be scraping the pegs at anything over 20 MPH.

(Well, you know I exaggerate - but that's the principle)

One of the biggest problems with these forks is simply tubes that are too small for today.

When new the tires for these bikes had grip a bit like a 2 year old child's hand. We all run around on what would have been considered race rubber back then. Wets even.

But if you improve the brakes, and yes, it can be done, what happens is they twist under hard braking.

I know because I once went that route using VM25 on the shoes.

The 860 GTS has really good bones.

But let's face it. Gawd punished Ducati for making an idol in his image.

He re-balanced nature by having them build the 860.
