Default performance valve stems and springs

So I did a top end rebuild over the winter on my 96 sporty 1200. New exhaust valve seal went bad on rear cyc, installed a new one, 1 month later, the valve seal went bad again. I am pretty sure its the valve seal thats leaking because the exhaust port is coated in tacky black residue along with the valve guide.

I am entertaining the idea that perhaps the valve stem is wearing the seals. They didn't seem to have any burrs. I did not replace them when i did the rebuild, I only relapped them. Now I think I need to replace the valves.

During the rebuild, I discovered that I have performance parts (S&S adjustable pushrods, maybe S&S cams, and triple springs, triple spring kit for a 96? Weird). I don't know the brand or size of the valves, so buying a new set is difficult.

Would like to buy the valves and have them ready to install before I tear into the engine. Is that possible? Tempted to replace the whole spring kit, valves, and pushrods to OEM just to make it simple.

perhaps the seals are not concentric to the guides, cannot do anything but fail.
correct seals? the seals are designed to leak.

I don't think the seals are designed to leak. They should hold back the oil in the rocker box from getting into combustion. Had a come to jesus moment....If I don't know what brand/size the valve spring kit or valves are, then the valve seals that come in the sportster cometic gasket kit might be incorrect. The valve seals I used are in the Cometic kit #C9763

if you research the stem seals, they must leak or the assy will fail. they use the sliding action of the stem to act as small pumps. the guide cannot get lube from any other source.

Right, I understand the valves "leak" to lube the stem. Makes sense. I just thought you were saying they're meant to actually leak excessively.

I think I had that issue the first time. I don't have huge sausage fingers, so I couldn't push the seals on the guides with my thumbs without damaging the tiny spring like the manual states to do. If I remember correctly, I think I used a 10-12mm socket to lightly tap it in. The tiny spring looked in good condition afterwards, but maaaaaybe I tapped it in too far? How am I supposed to judge the correct placement? Is it better for the seal not to touch the guide's shoulder or is that not on enough?
