good point but it seems that hd uses them as a convenience during assy. look at most other applications and you will see a bolt. how many studs for ground do you see in the auto world or the industrial world. now thread pitch does matter when it comes to high frequency. ever work on a MEP or turbine, not many coarse threads there. ground points do not use gobs of torque and should not be under critical fasteners.

Update:

So, in some free time, I have been through all of the connections between the ignition switch, starter switch, starter and case, and all seem clean and secure. I had replaced both relays. The two year-old battery, though (was an O'Reilly's knock off and sat on a tender in a hot Florida garage a lot), seems to have been charging only to 12.31 volts across the poles when I tested it with a meter multiple times this weekend. I gather it was sulfated beyond recovery as that was the maximum achievable reading. Given that, I put a genuine Harley battery in and, thus far, have been unable to replicate the original complaint. The lights are brighter and the bike runs noticeably better, so I suspect that the other battery was just failing. I have been leaving the new one off the tender for a while because I want to see if the battery discharges at all from just riding, with no assist from the tender. So far, so good.

Thanks for the update.

Per post 54, 12.3 vdc is less than a 50% charge.

Voltages are very helpful.

Indeed, in re-reading, that was one of the things that made me go back and test. Glad I did. Batteries are strange creatures.
