See the Sportsterpedia page on filters:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/techtalk:ref il07
Personally - this is what I do:
However, these filters are now a smooth finish in dark blue - I prefered the rough finish of the older yellow version (as pictured).
No matter, strip the label sticker off and they come out silver after painting. Be sure to put a little oil on the sealing ring BEFORE painting, so the paint will not stick. Wipe off the paint to keep a clean sealing surface.

I just put them on. Being yellow or blue has never bothered me. No one has ever commented on my oil filter color...

what about the PC FLOW reusable filters and the SS mesh scren media with the pre-oil filter magnet.
also looking at the PK RACING reusable also.
pricey but over the lifetime of oil changes should be way cheaper I would think.

Only downside is see is cleaning it and dumping the waste. Not everyone has a solvent parts washer in their shop. Seems like a messy job.

the Flow reusable one I have cleans rather easily and with dawn dish soap/warm water/air dry. washes clean really well with dawn dish soap...I thought the first time I did it in the parts washer with solvent/brake clean it was more mess/hassle cleaning it. Dawn from then on. 5 mins tops and done.
only down side I have had so far is the 5th oil change I had to replace the rubber quad ring. it came with an extra one and I have a bulk pack of 10 ordered.
doubles as a heat sink/cooler with the billet body/machined rings on it to start oil cooling before it goes to the oil cooler itself.
with the cheap thermometer, oil cap on I only saw a slight cooling effect with the oil filter only, the lockhart-HD oil cooler dropped it dramatically during summer heat in Fl. that and switching to SAE70 motor oil.
I had been using the napa gold no-drain back valve universal filter @ 16$ a pop and over change the oil every 2500 miles since the complete rebuild.
wont be long till it has paid for itself.

Fortnine has a good video comparing reusable filters, paper filters and fiberglass. Paper tops them them all.

Permanent medical grade mesh filters flow easier than the paper kind, claim is that they use up less hp. That makes more power available to the rear wheel and better gas mileage to boot. All good.
