I am not sure about this but I don,t think you can fill a combustion chamber to 14.7 psi with an intake valve 1/3 the size of the cylinder.you know what I mean LIFT/DRAG air flow.

120/120 is fine, its not the actual figure but the difference between them that is important.

Just checking, did you remember to keep the throttle wide open during the test? and to have the engine at full operating temperature? If either of these was missed your result is less than it would be.

Welcome! to the IronHead forum.

I don't think the guy has done a compression test yet. He says he read it should be 110 psi. How about it Brownskull, done it yet? Borrow/buy a gauge. Warm it up, take both plugs out. Screw the gauge in one side then the other with the throttle open
and report. Lets put this to bed.

Hallo what is the complet Timing Ratio of the R5 in Degrees?
The one of my BSA is
IN op 45° BTDC Clo 65°ABDC
EX op 65° ABDC Clo 30°ATDC

Comp Rate is 8:1 130psi is what i get with the Lowcomp Sporty Piston
The main problem is a overheatet EX valve.
Some Old man told me i have to set the timing so to get a flush of fresh air over the Ex valve to cool it....

Best Regards

did someone put low compression pistons in it?they were 9:1 from the factory.you'll get the best comp readings with the motor hot, throttle held wide open.

120-120 is what I would expect on a well used engine.

try the test again after squirting a little oil (enough to coat the walls/rings) into the cylinders.
If the pressures some up 10 PSi or so, your just looking at normal wear on an Ironhead of that age.

With a fresh battery an electric leg should be fast enough to get you a correct reading. Kicking is always "Problematical".
