Default Chain Inspection Cover And Gasket Changed In '09

The rubber primary chain inspection cover gasket # 34986-04 was replaced in '09 by a metal and paper gasket # 34990-08.

At the same time the chain inspection cover itself was changed:

Chrome # 34761-04 by # 34761-04A.
Polished # 34993-04 by # 34993-04A.
Black # 34794-05 by # 34794-05A.

Apparently, the only difference with the new covers is that they are thicker, to go with the new thinner gaskets. The new covers come with the gasket.

There are several threads about this; here are a few of them:

Don't know about the old ones, but the new ones will leak if not replaced when removing the cover. Ask me how I know.

I beg your pardon but i have not understand...
Then when you remove the primary inspection cover on 09 up bike... you have to buy in advance not only the gasket but the cover as well (the gasket work only if purchased like a set)

Is it that right?
Thanks in advance and have a good day

No, just buy the gasket. Or you could get the old style gasket if you prefer.

Ok
Understood
The only difference is that the rubber gasket fit all the new inspection cover types... while the rigid one have to be specific to each of them

Thank you very much indeed

I just went to the dealer today to grab some gaskets for my first service. They handed me a rubber inspection cover gasket for my 19' Iron. I had to ask when they changed them as my 09' had a metal one. Then they took it back and handed me the metal one. Are they still metal from 09 onwards?

I don't know about 'still'. They were rubber from '04 to '08, then changed to metal and paper in '09, as described in post # 1. They have remained the same from '09 onwards.
