It is indeed MindfulRider's photo. He has a couple photos in his gallery. He'll obviously need to provide any permission you might need.

I agree, most of us probably don't bother looking at the torque specs and getting the torque wrench out for non-critical fasteners like these, especially with o-rings. Hence why we don't hear about more of these cracked covers. Thankfully, as it's a pretty expensive oops for doing routine maintenance "by-the-book".

I never updated this thread, but here are the specs I found listed in all the manuals from 07-16 and how I handled it in the www.cyclepedia.com EFI Sportster manual:

Quote:
CAUTION: Use extreme care when tightening the inspection cover screws. Be sure the threads are completely clean and dry, and that you are sure about torque wrench calibration. These fasteners are threaded into a delicate aluminum boss and can easily break or damage the expensive primary cover. There have been many reported instances of component failure on the 2008 and newer models when using the higher torque specs (in the 80-120 in-lb range). The older models with the lower torque spec of (40-60 in-lb) do not have this issue.

Primary Drive Chain Cover Screw Torque:

2004-08 models 40 – 60 in-lb or 4.5 – 6.8 N-m

2009-10 models 84 – 120 in-lb or 9.5 – 13.6 N-m

2011-15 models 90 – 120 in-lb or 10.2 – 13.6 N-m

2016 models 100 – 120 in-lb or 11.3 – 13.6 N-m
