I had a similar incident to this (in reverse) on another motorcycle forum - GSResources. A new member had posted a reg/rec question and I had just completed the same fix on my GS. Turns out he lives 2 blocks over from me. I invited him over to show him how I wired up my reg/rec.

Have just been in touch with Richard Nicholls from Redgrave. He is, as you correctly said, knowledgeable, efficient, and friendly. Although he didn’t have the part I will definitely be dealing with Redgrave in future. Richard asked me to pass on his regards to Gene. Thanks for this recommendation.

No worries. They have helped me in the past. It can be really hard n Oz as truly, they're aren't all that many IH's here.

This is despite the fact that I owned an XLB, one of the rarest Sportsters made about 2 miles from I lived in Donnybrook my Mate Chris owned a 1960 version XLB.

I moved 10 years ago and guess what ? My next door neighbor owns an IH,

They're like elbows around me. Most people have at least two.

Ok, so the set of shims (5 of them in the set) have turned up from Redgrave Motorcycles. I am now very happy as I have what I need to do my clutch.

I have spare rivets and a kicker plate in this photo.

An initail test told me the kicker plates weren't sitting flat.

Hand fitting required here. 15 minutes with a small stone sorted out the high spots created when the holes for the rivets were formed in the kicker plate.

.

Both kicker plates I had were like that. Not quite flat. Ran the stone over everything else and it was all good. Both looked new, one certainly was.

So, just selective assembly now to find the closest shim to what's required.

(I would be hoping to get to 0.001 - 0.002 clearance.)

Great thread Ferrous. Maybe some time in the future when I have to get back into my clutch I'll take a stab at what you're doing. Good to know those shims are out there for the time being. Be sure to post on how it works out...

Have to get the riveting done and I have to machine the trap door for kicker clearance.

I guess the later Trock doors are only meant for electric start engines.

Or maybe the one I own is a fake ?

Whatever, the door isn't machined for kicker gear clearance. So, need to get that bit milled.

Seems like if it's not one thing it's another.

OK, the door machined for a kicker gear.

And with the kicker installed.

All goog.

I wasn't sure I should bother doing the kicker thing as I'll probably not be able to kick this thing over anyway.

But they are handy to have on the bike and someone else down the track may want to prove their manhood by kick starting this thing.

(Also, I may end up putting the engine on gas and then I probably could kick it).

Well, I can dream.
