I have a 2017 and have just done the spring plate delete using the XR1200 parts.

I followed the FSM and replaced the shaft seal and inspection cover gasket along with all the primary gasket and other o-rings. The shifter shaft seal was pushed in as far as it would go.

I have done around 200 miles and so far all is well.

Two things come to mind; first, always cover the shaft splines with Scotch tape to protect the seal lip from being cut when sliding the new seal over the shaft. the second thing is that there was a change in the shaft diameter at some point. I had the same problem a few years ago when the dealer sold me the wrong seal and it started leaking shortly after the change.

That change was with the 2006’s, when the shaft diameter grew as did all related parts. And it’s not uncommon for H.D. parts technicians to get it wrong.

Try some silicone grease on the shaft and seal. The usual petroleum base (dino) grease will just be dissolved by your primary/transmission oil. Silicone grease won't and will stay in place.

My '17 leaked oil but it wasn't the shift shaft seal, it was from the inspection cover right above the shift shaft. I normally use HD gaskets but in this case the James Gaskets inspection cover gasket does seem to be better than the OE HD gasket and if you do a little e-bay shopping you can buy several for the price of one HD gasket.
It seems to be good now but thanks for the silicone grease idea I’ll have to buy some to have on hand. I have two spare shifter seals just in case. My inspection cover has never leaked but like I said it’s the second go round for the shifter shaft seal. I suppose I can’t complain too much. This bike runs better than ever despite her being seventeen years old. Hammer 1275 and worked 1200 heads woke this thing up unbelievable.
