There is no need to have two threads going.

The bypass valve randy3934 mentioned is the transfer valve.
More on the transfer valve here in the Sportsterpedia:
http://www.sportsterpedia.com/doku.p...76_and_earlier

Here it is.

And the red circle is where you should find it.
Some have removed it and/or plugged theirs in the past.
If yours is plugged or stopped up, it may not transfer oil from the primary to the crankcase as it is suppose to do.

if you filled it to the top of the inspection plug, then it is about 1/2 full. with the transfer valve in, i doubt you pulled that much oil out of the primary with a short run but excess oil in the flywheel compartment would make it very sluggish and possible die at idle.
what i would suspect is that the starter assy might be messing up, not the starter itself.
i doubt the clutch pack is the issue.
some engines have the do not pull drain plugs on the tranny and flywheel compartment. against popular consensus, you can remove them, just be careful putting them back in since it is soft aluminum, a little teflon tape and about 10 inch pounds will work.

I'm having a similar issue. To troubleshoot I drained the engine and trans oil. I replaced the filter and refilled oil tank and primary to proper levels. I let the bike sit for a week. The oil level in the tank had noticeably dropped. Where did it go? In the primary. The bike fired up and ran fine. Took it for a ten minute ride and rechecked the oil level and it was full to where it was supposed to be. Transfer valve doing what it's supposed to do.

thanks bustert . im pretty the transfer valve is in and working as it should. i wont be touching the drain plug under the bike. i have heard some horror stories and this bad deal is enough for one lifetime. i havent pulled the primary off yet but will soon. it just seems odd that the stater assembly is playing up at the same time. its a very severe noise and i dont like it at all. so pretty much i need to pull the primary off and clean eveything out . i have a new pressure plate to install so i will give the plated a good clean while im in there. so basically there is not a lot of major damage i could have done except goo everything up with oil?. thanks for your advice man.
