Default Ironhead to Buell

I have been looking to get out of my 74 Ironhead so I can buy a Buell for a while now. I found a guy willing to trade even for his 2006 XB12r. Anything special about hat year I need to know? I am pretty excited for the trade!!

I'd look for a tube framed model rather than any of the later XB range.
Much more user friendly when it comes to servicing and maintenance

Did you end up making the trade? I'm looking to possibly acquire a Buell myself, just wondering how you liked the transition if you went for it

I have a 2000 S3T (tube frame) and a 2009 XB12R (fuel in frame), and both have their spot. The S3T is a fun bike to ride, easy to work on (mostly) and comfortable for more than commuting or a jaunt through the mountains. The XB is an absolute blast in the twisties (a good portion of my commute), very fun to ride and handles like nothing else I have ridden. It is a little more awkward to work on since you have to rotate the engine to service certain things. Not a big deal, but more work. It's also a different riding position and after 50 or so miles, a little uncomfortable. Might be OK on it up to 100 miles, but that's pushing it.

I've also kept my sportster since it is a different ride altogether and the only one of the 3 the SO feels comfortable riding and riding on. She is shorter than me.

Each model has it's own place and all can be ridden hard without worry.

Good luck!

I went from a 2004 XL1200R cafe racer to a 2009 Buell XB12Scg. It is pretty much everything I was looking for with all the upgrades to my XL1200... Suspension was much better, less weight, sportbike tires, more horsepower stock, etc... It is harder to access certain things on the bike for routine maintenance (harder to reach spark plugs, can't remove rockerbox covers without rotating the engine down, oil filter harder to remove if you have the chin fairing on). Also, be aware that the 2003-2007 XB's have weaker cranks than the 2008+ XB's. I haven't had much trouble doing maintenance on my bike in the three years I've had it so far.

Thanks for that info! The more I read about different Buells the more I wish I had known about them when I was younger! I got my first Harley at 25 years old which was almost 5 years ago.

Now I'm going to be looking for a Uly with any luck.
