Default stator replacement

So I'm half way through changing stator on my 91 -I read the manual and watched a number of YouTube vids none of which highlighted the problem I've encountered .The flat plate that holds the output wires in place -held in with two screws-Access to the left lower screw is denied by the gear shifter assembly -cant even get a flat screw driver on it (not that that's likely to work any way-judging by the one I've just got out)
Is only me or has any one else encountered this?
The said gear shift shaft assembely appears to be held on only by two nylock nuts and looks as though it should, maybe, wigggle out from that selecter drum thing, but i'm reluctant to try without checking to see if any one else has had this problem and how they overcame it

Oh and the tiny spring that keeps the arm pressed agianst the drum thing - laying broken in the botom of the primary - geting one of those will be fun

I just hold the shifter in the downshift position. It allows the bolt to be exposed and you can unbolt it.

if you remove those two nylon lock washers, you're going to have to readjust the lifter pawl as per the manual . in 3rd with a #32 drill bit.. it's a pain in the ass..

Yes thanks it let me get a screw diver on it but not a socket -I ground down the head of a ring spanner but that couldn't get a grip it either (they look for all the world like the kind of cut screws used on tin roofs) In the end I bent the plate up

Thanks I thought that might be the case - I'm just hope I haven't disturbed it all trying to at that screw - I should have just bent the plate back in the first place
