Impact are nice to unscrew, for screwing, if you don't start the screw by hand those impact gun will be the best tool to cross thread your Torx or Allen bolt.

Seriously, in decades man it's not been an issue.

Sure once in a while one starts to strip. That's a result of not holding the driver square while applying twist.

And that's RARE.

That is true with any fastener. Always start by hand, never with a wrench.

Remember that this cover has a spring behind it. I bet it is usually the last screw that you guys find so tight and strip. If you just take each screw/bolt out completely out all the way around, then that spring pushes the plate out and puts the last one in a bind. Try taking them out evenly all the way around and see if it helps.

But yes, torx kind of suck. I replaced all of mine with hex heads.

Good Point.

I crack them all loose, then remove three. I hold the center of the cover to keep it seated with my left hand while I remove the remaining three screws using my impact. It's never a good idea to let the cover get cocked while removing or installing it.

... i.e. rotational impact only. Handy-dandiest little tool ever for things like this. Lots of brands on the market. The Dewalt is the best I've personally used, but they all work. You can pop a primary cover off in seconds.
I have this DeWalt and never thought of using it on the sporty but will now!
Certainly would have made faster work of my clutch pack swap.

Just got a set of JIS after reading about this here on Xlforum and took a Mikuni carb apart in seconds, in the past I have drilled the heads off mikuni screws and used vice grips to get them apart. God, I wished I had known this back in the 1970's.
