Default Pre-ride inspection importance.

Was just getting ready for an all day ride. While checking the air in the front tire I noticed the clutch cable frayed and only holding by a few strands. No ride today. Instead I'll be removing the primary cover and calling Barnett to order a new cable Monday morning.
This is a Barnett cable with about 3 years/ 5100 miles

Get the length right, no sharp bends, especially at the lever.
Get a longitudinally wound cable with a liner.

I believe I have the length right. The cable is + 2 inches to accommodate my tracker handlebars. I keep it adjusted correctly and it always operates smooth and easy. It looks like the cable crimp failed. According to Barnett all of their control cables are longitudinally wound with liners.
When I call Monday I will confirm.

Glad you found that before setting out. I had my clutch cable break at the lever and wound up driving through the door of a hot dog place. Fortunately someone held the door open for me.

Many don’t know that these little emergency repair ends exist. I always have one in my little road kit...

Once I learned how to silver braze and got my own torch, I stopped relying on swaged cable ends and started doing my own. I could have repaired your cable for you in a couple minutes and IMHO had it better than new. Just a little bit shorter.

If the failure was at the lever end, be sure you have the pivot pin installed in the correct direction. If installed backwards, it will rub and wear the cable. It shows correct installation inst in the manual.

pre and post ride inspection is paramount... in every kind of bike...
that's the difference between a motorbike rider... and a car driver occasionally on two wheels...

Glad to hear you caught that. A pre-ride inspection recently showed that I lost my rear axle nut on a previous ride.

yeah ok. not running the isle of man everyday so my pre-inspection a little less compulsive. walk up to bike. can see air in tires, if sportster look in gas tank, does engine start-yes, oil pressure-yes, touch cylinders with fingers till some warmth. pre-ride-inspection complete.
