Default Breather timing off just a bit 1974 engine

My breather gear is off just a bit when my timing mark is straight up in the timing window. Is this normal? Ive tried finding info for this exact question, but everyone with later bikes chimes in and the post goes off-topic.
This is a 1974 engine.
Spiral gear mark is straight up.
Timing mark is straight up.
Breather gear is, as you can see, off a little to the right. Spiral gear has a little bit of play back and forth on the pinion shaft.
Cam gear edge is, i hope, 5/16" from cam cover mating surface..the jims tool wont set that gear that exact depth, so i had to get it there with a caliper and use the tool in a different manner than indicated in the instructions.
So does that seem okay? I've tried moving the spiral gear and breather different directions, but that is as close as I can get it.

If that's as close as you can get it then that's where you should leave it. It's common that the hole can't be perfectly centered. When checking alignment you should pull the spiral gear against the pinion gear because that's where it will be with the engine running.

I checked my breather opening and closing with a degree wheel. It's perfect, and with the advance timing mark centered and pinion gear 5/16 from gasket surface the hole is slightly to the right, EXACTLY like yours.

There's several parts that can affect the line up and
machining tolerances can combine to throw it off.

None of them align perfectly but it's not required.

If you want it perfect you can shim the gear out or grind some off the back of the gear.

But it is certainly not necessary - even on race engines.

It will be fine, lots of them are like that? Sometimes you can turn the spiral gear around and it will help? Depends on the situation? Sometimes putting a couple of extra gaskets between crankcase and pump helps? Had one racebike that had too much oil in the flywheel chamber and Didn't respond to tuning at the track. Advanced the timing one whole tooth and improved things greatly! Wasn't right according to the book, but worked well at the track!

thanks.i was thinking advancing by one tooth on the small window pump would have a similar effect as the large window timing on the-72 pump?

No, in crankshaft degrees advancing the pump one tooth on a 1/4 speed pump would be double the amount of a 1/2 speed pump.

Both pumps have 20 teeth on the breather gear, so one tooth movement is equal to 18°. With the 1/2 speed you double that to 36° crank rotation.

With the 1/4 speed pump you need to multiply the 18° pump rotation times 4 to get the crankshaft degrees of 72°

If the breather slot is set to open at 25° ATC and you then advance the 1/2 speed pump 1 tooth it will open 36° earlier at 11° BTC.

If you advance the 1/4 speed pump one tooth from the 25 ATC it will then open 72° earlier at 47 BTC.

I never thought of it before Brucstoudt, but it looks like the 1/4 speed is more critical to get the timing right.

Just reread your question. Maybe I misunderstood your question. Were you wondering if advancing the small window pump 1 tooth would then equal the timing of the 1/2 speed? If so, no it wouldn't.
