Smile 1983 Ironhead motor in a 1996 EVO frame?

Hello all, new to the forum. I found this site through Google and it has been such a great help, I needed to join. I had an 1983 Ironhead motor that has been laying around. The tranny was out and missing all the primary drive parts. Reinstalled the tranny and assembled the primary drive. I got an 1996 Evo frame and wanted to install the motor in that frame. Has anyone done this swap. I have seen a ton of posts about Evo in Ironhead frames but nothing about Ironhead in Evo frames.
Thanks,

Me> when wondering stuff like this

I just bite the bullet and lay down the frame. Lay dow the motor on it's side inside the frame the best I can.
Then take a look see.

Who knows. You might blaze a trail here.

OK. I'll mention it/ You will probably find out a rubber mount frame is way way harder to convert to ironhead mounting than a rigigd evo frame. Like my 1990 . You are lucky your 1996 is a rigid sportster frame mount system.

Better chance of this working.

Read post about Evos in IH frames to learn differing details, but laying your frame over your engine is the first thing to do.

I am not especially knowledgeable about this, but I seem to recall that you have to modify the EVO frame to get the IronHead engine in there - the ironhead engine is too tall ???

There is at least one thread on this topic on this forum, from several years ago.

Thanks all for the info. From reviewing this site, the evo motor is taller than an ironhead. I know I am going to have to make/modify front and top mounts. Mat also have to cut off the kickstand mount, but no big deal. 5 and 4 speed cases are a little different. One has a recess and the other does not. I am just going to have to try and shoehorn it in the frame and see what it looks like. Thanks again for the info.

Hey there 4shizzle...any luck or maybe some pics of what you ended up with? Seems an interesting project.. keep us updated.. I for one will like to see it happen.. ironhead lives even after losing its frame and an evo had to sacrifice there's for it to happen..LOL

I'd check to make sure you can easily remove the rear rocker box with the engine in the frame.

I’ll keep you guys posted. Ordering a new clutch hub starter gear. Need to finish the motor, then the frame. I’ll post some pics of my other Ironhead! Too keep it going! Appreciate the input. I am ordering the starter gear now
