Default 77 XLT smokes a lot on start up

My 77 xlt, milage only 16k, smokes a lot at start up, blue or white smoke, but then clears up after about 1/2 mile or so. Any recomendations on additives, I am not really interested in doing a top end since I only ride it sparingly, thanks, Larry

Unusual for an engine with such low mileage.
Normally, smoe on startup that goes away in a few seconds is valve guides.
But worn rings, bor problems will cause smoke until the pistons heat up.

Get someone to follow you once the engine is warm. Bring it up to 4-5 grand in third and snap the throttle shut. If it smokes when you do that, it's rings/piston/bore.

Default The Smoke

Following your thread. Mine starting doing the same thing halfway through summer. It’s a 73 XLH and was running well.
Mine starting blowing oil through the rocker box gasket and the exhaust on the front cylinder.
So oil in the combustion chamber. Not going to heal is it?
Get the wrenches out!
