What oil temp do you run?

HOT!

#1, I truly honestly don't have a clue. I don't have a freaking temperature gauge on my oil tank.
#2, When I saw this thread had 99 replies... I couldn't resist!

Only ~6% of Sportsters get up to operating oil temperature?
Normal oil temperature is listed as 230 F in the 2013 Service manual under oil pressure testing.
~66% run cooler than "normal"

About the same as run "synthetic" oil in this poll- ~68%

Probably just down to the gauges being faulty. (Mine is, read 180-185 in boiling water) The owners don't check them so have just given the readings there gauges display. Unless............. all those lower reading owners are running synthetic oil!

According to "Doc Harley" on the U-tube, the Proper running temp on all Harleys is 210F -250F. He says that's the way they are designed.

I assume I dont like the ambient outside temperature at the area where oil goes to 250F. We have here 40F...80F (high value is rare) and the oil temp is of course lower than in hot areas.

I have adjusted my engine well rich at idle and low speed to keep oil temperature bit lower. There is not too much oil pressure with hot oil and my bike need some for Garrett turbo.

Even though you have a lot more airflow around the engine on the higway you are creating more heat in the engine with higher rpms and hp. Around town the airflow is down obviously, but so are the constant demands on the engine. The heads get hot around town though.
I get the same results in my 2005. I have the H-D analog thermometer/oil cap. I always check the temp when I come to a stop at the bottom of the exit ramp when getting off the interstate (70-75 mph) and I consistently have around 200 degrees. When I come to a stop after riding secondary roads (45-60 mph) I consistently have around 175 degrees. Note that I have the 883 with shorter gears so it's working harder on the interstate and that may be a factor - not sure.

Mine are about the same as yours. (2006 XL883) My highest is when the ambient temp is ~85F; then its 200-210F, riding double.
