since an amp meter is in series with the current, it is polarity sensitive and if in backwards, will give the negative reading.
mr. doo, i was not intending to place an existing regulator in the box, it would have to be built, the actual circuits are small even in a off the shelf potted unit. the main current carrying semi-conductors would have been heat sinked to the rear plate.

Bypassed the fuse between the key and battery. Still the same. Bustert that could have been the case with the ammeter. I was using an old unit I had on the shelf. When I hooked it up it did not have any polarity markings on the case. I am out of ideas. To the shop and, I will post as soon as I get this figures out. Thank you to all.

Had to buy a analog voltmeter because the one I purchased off of eBay would not work. Of course and, it was a hundred bucks. Figures. I went to Lowes and purchased one off the shelf. My bike reads a stable just below 14 volts while running and 12.8 with the new battery not running. Gassed it to over 2500 and regulator was working regulating at 14 volts. The 1970 XLCH would not give a stable reading after repairs with a digital multimeter. Although I did get accurate readings with my digital multimeter on my 1979 XLH and my 1966 XLH. It was erratic and, the numbers were jumping all over the place with the 1970 XLCH. Have a 50 mile ride planned for Friday.Hope all goes well but I find it hard to believe that for whatever reason the quality digital meter could not read the XLCH. I will update the post after the ride. Thanks to all.
