MLS (multi layer steel) are the best head gaskets, I think most will agree.
As for base gaskets, steel with coating like the MLS works fine. I also had good experiences with aluminum base gaskets together with a coating of Hylomar.

Coating for sure - Yamabond-4 is the one to use. Its been known to be used without ANY gasket at the base, and not leak.
