Default Carb, manifold issues

Good day all, having probs with 75 ironhead, little back ground, had this bike for 7 yrs or so. It’s always had a few issues not wanting to idle. Couple yrs ago I found carb was loose, tightened the manifold clamps and issue gone. Than last yr same thing again. This yr rode a couple of times, tried tighten clamps and won’t idle at all. In fact will only run if you keep it rev up. So got new o-rings and clamps, installed and same thing. I believe it’s sucking air from somewhere. The manifold has some pitting where the clamp goes on, not sure if this could be a problem. Included some pics. Has bendix carb. Any help greatly appreciated, Dave

Check both the manifold and the carb flanges to see if they are flat?

If the carb has been overtightened the flange(s) may be bowed.

Assuming you have tried to adjust the idle screw and low speed screw to no avail, you might have to replace the throttle shaft seals on your Bendix. A strip down so the idle passages can be cleaned out with compressed air and checked with carb cleaner to see if they are clear might be worth doing. You might also want to check pushrod adjustment. Lots of things can give a poor idle such as timing and related components or overall engine condition. Do you have a carb support bracket?

i was thinking if your bike sat for a while the carb might need a good cleaning. disassemble and submerge all the metal parts in a gallon can of berryman's carb cleaner over night, then pour a pot of boiling water over and through all the parts and passages you can get to.

You know how using spray penetrating oil or carb cleaner to find vacuum leaks, well if you can't keep it running, use a heavy wheel or chassis grease on the seals to see if it holds vacuum...Caution: Heavy grease turns to liquid when Hot and is prone to leaving oil trails

Carb has a support, pushrod adj is good. The bike run fine first couple of rides this yr. Then had a hard time idling, so I tried tighting manifold clamps and it got much worst. I have put new o -rings and clamps but still same.

Will it run better if you put the choke on? If it does, that’s a pretty good sign there’s an intake leak.

Well it looks like you have got it pinpointed to the manifold, if it were me I would have another look to make sure the manifold is nicely spaced between the heads, there should be an even gap at each side to let the o-rings seat in, the manifold should not be touching the head, remove the carb again to get a good look inside the manifold too, you may have to slacken the cylinder base nuts (if you’re using gaskets down there, some folks just use sealer) although it’s now likely that the gasket may get destroyed after being in position for so long, but this would let you rotate the cylinders to line everything up. Obviously all other cyl head fixings exhaust clamps etc will have to be slackened off to achieve this.
