Nethanol (Alcohol) actually burns pretty cleanly. I buy 99.9% pure Methanol from Hyper Fuels. Years ago we ran some Acetone to help with starting in the winter and some Castrol R. But these days we don't dilute it with anything.
Ironheads are OK at the drag strip where they only run hard for a few seconds. But any kind of sustained high use will lead to heat related problems once you start extracting more power than a stock engine.
A port job combined with PB cams and a magneto won't be much faster than a stock bike. The 900's already have ports that are a tad too big for the engine. Unless the work was extensive and very well done it's unlikely porting would have added anything to the performance. The 69's came with the better ports to start with.

Where IH's really start to shine is when you bore/stroke them. Around 1100cc's the ports start working much better in the low and mid ranges.

One of the by products of Meth burning is water. You might see a little more rust inside the pipes but unless they were running some of the more exotic fuels (Fuels IS rocket science) you wouldn't expect any unusual deposits.

The only reason you need to turn to Alcohol or more exotic fuels is if the high compression ratio's dictate it.
If you don't really need it it's just another PITA that makes racing such a PITA.

the PB cams are a large clue.the XLR's ran them in a 55 cu.in.motor.doesn't seem likely an all out race motor on fuel would be running them.

I certainly appreciate the responses I have received. What I have gleened from reading them is the engine likely has a good number of miles on it and the excessive deposits in the exhaust port is likely just from oil passing the guides and rings. That said I'm sticking to my plan. I want a complete bike that I can crank and run down the road to establish some sort of benchmark per se. I've already picked up another set of cylinders and I'm contemplating stroker flywheels when I do tear it down. That will be a decision when It's apart and I see what I actually have. It is a basket case it could be anything. I had the cam cover off because the generator ear on the case was cracked off. I had the primary apart to weld up several cover screw holes where the case was busted out. This really is a rescue. lol

I've noticed the Facebook like button but never thought about it until now. I post pics on Facebook of my 69 on my page and Old Iron Harleys 1933-85 (No Evo). I've got her running now, just a bunch of little stuff left to get her on the road.
