Default My favourite bike

Thought I'd post this up in case anyone is planning on importing a used HD.
I've loved XLCR's since I saw my first one in the 80's in a local bike mag. Then I saw Michael Douglas ride one in Hard Rain.
About 4 years ago I decided to start looking for one.
Took me 3 years, but finally found one sitting in Qld that was for sale (found a few others in between not for sale!). So I bought it.
Overall it ain't in bad nick. It has been used and that is what I want to do, I don't want a trophy to look at.
In the nearly 12 months I've owned it, I've been slowly working toward getting it registered so I can ride it a bit further than to the end of my street and back.
First, the brake light wouldn't work, so had to replace the brake light switch in the hand brake. No biggie, got a part on ebay for a few $ and the repair was easy.
Then I took it to my local rego inspector with the import paperwork. Soon found out they can't do the inspection as the bike has never been rego'd in Oz before, so the VIN has to be read into a computer somewhere. In WA, that means Perth, which is 3,000km from home! Apparently that applies to all bikes newer than 1975. Mines a 1978.
No trouble, I'll take it to Darwin and rego it in the NT, then transfer it back again. So I tow it up to a mates place in Darwin and put it over the pits there. They come up with a few small things like the red reflectors used in the states on the side are illegal, the rego plate holder fell off while being towed and the front tyre is knackered. No problems, the local dealer had it all sorted for me for less than $600, including re-doing the bearings and seals on the front axle as well as pick up and delivery. Also, as the bike is older than 1979 (by 1 year!) it has to be engineered. Doh!
So I chase around a couple of engineers until I locate a bloke who will happily travel to where the bike is and do the inspection there. Piece of cake and it only costs a standard fee of $275. Nothing needs changing.
So I travel back up to Darwin to put it back over the pits and get rego.
The starter motor fails and I can't get it to the inspector. Doh!
Turns out the local dealer has a starter motor in stock, so I book the bike in to have this fixed and drive back home again.
I'm planning on going back in a fortnight and will hopefully get this all finalised.
Been a long slow process, mostly coz a live a few miles away from everything, but each step has been pretty easy and painless. But I ain't there yet! Will keep you posted.
