Have you checked for an intake leak. The speratic idling could be due to that.

Are you certain of the noise location? You listened with a stethoscope? Screwdriver? Funnel & hose? Lifters or Rockers? Something else?

Maybe a bad lifter that starts to malfunction as the oil thins during heat up?

Idle speed - Float level & valve seal? Petcock diaphragm? Vacuum hose? Map sensor?

What was the last thing you did to the bike before this started?

have you check the slide diaphragm?
if the oil viscosity is down, could affect lifters when hot and do not rule out a filter going south. remember "KISS" before the $hop.

Thanks for the further replies.

Interesting turn of events this morning, it’s not necessarily related to temperature. I started it cold this morning after the bike sitting overnight and the noise was present immediately. I’ve checked for intake leaks, the manifold seals are fine, as is the slide diaphragm. Since reassembling, the bike runs smoother but the noise is still present.

Whilst I can’t say for certain the noise is the lifters, it’s coming from under the rocker covers and sounds very much like a louder, slightly harsher version of a typical HD lifter noise. It definitely sounds similar to a bike with very old/not enough oil.

The exhaust note, and not necessarily at the muffler, sounds louder and ever so slightly less deep.

In terms of what I’ve done to the bike prior, I hadn’t touched a thing for quite some time, the noise just started happening one morning.

Update on this, I think it may be down to a lack of oil circulating/oil pressure when warmed up.

Is there a way to check if oil is returning? I’ve got no gauges/indicator lights so wouldn’t have gotten an oil warning.

If indeed it is the oil, is the likely cause a problem with the pump or is there other things to check?

you can tell if the oil is returning to the oil tank by just taking off the oil cap and you can see the oil circulating in the tank.

Yep - Which should be a frequent action since you eliminated the OIL warning light...
