back pressure a bad thing is a blanket statement and is not necessarily true in all situations. every engine is diff. for ex: if you run an expansion chamber open, the engine suffers, the stinger or exit port which is a controlled bleed in very important.
an engine only has a band of power and is shaped by how it is configured, the exh ONLY compliments it.
each exh bandaide has it +/-'s. church key cuts, perfs, flow thru perfs & blind perfs operate diff and is controlled by size.
when i up the ole 74ch, i had issue with all of them, could solve one problem but create another, before it ran flawlessly even though not to max capacity. after studying commercial exh systems, i tried a change in direction concept. high performance exh do not restrict with the above, they use a radius bend. the thing about exh and pressure waves is the DO NOT like changes in direction as the waves are straight lined.
after toying with diff ideas, i made a set of twisted baffles and now my upper & lower play nice and the exh note is pleasant. it also fights reversion since it too does not like change of direction.

Yeah Mick. I've heard Mazzola found its calling in 1948 to 1965 big twins--
...'cause it doesn't stick to the pan. Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck.

exh and pressure waves is the DO NOT like changes in direction
Exhaust gas (the molecules) has considerable inertia during engine operation, but still reverses into the chamber during overlap and low RPM.
The pressure wave (not the gas) reverses back up the pipe to the exhaust valve when it reaches a big change in cross-sectional area.
If the change is to zero (open megaphone or drag pipe) it reflects with its sign reversed (positive becomes negative). According to Blair, more than 2-1/2 X the ID is the same as fully open.
If the change is a big restriction (reverse cone or a flat plate) it reflects with the same sign (remains positive).
Jennings "2 Stroke Tuners Manual" has great data on this.
